Shabwah Governorate lies in the south-central of the Republic of Yemen, and it is the third largest governorate in Yemen in terms of area. It is
surrounded by four governorates, as it is bordered by Hadramout to the east, Marib to the north, and Abyan and Al-Bayda to the west. It is 474 km from the capital, Sana'a.
The governorate extends over an area of 47,584 square kilometers, and it is distinguished by being one of the least densely populated governorates in Yemen.
Its population is estimated at between 600,000 and 700,000 people distributed over several small urban centers, the largest of which is the capital Ataq, Al-Olaya and Azzan. Its annual population growth rate is (2.54%).

The governorate is rich in its archaeological and historical sites, which are: Tamnu town, Ataq Museum, Kudour Mountain, Qina Port, Balhaf Port, and the Abadan Great Inscription.
Shabwa governorate has a desert climate that is hot in summer and mild in winter and tends to be cold at night.
