The governorate is bordered on the west by the Governorate of Amran, from the southwest by the Governorate of Sana'a, on the South by the
Governorate of Marib, on the east by the Governorate of Hadramaut, on the northeast by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and from the north by the Governorate of Sa’ada. It rises 580 meters above sea level.
Its area is about 39,496 square kilometers, about 7.2% of Yemen’s total area.
Its population of (443,797) people, according to the results of the General Census of Housing, Population and Establishments 2004, is spread in scattered population centers, and they increase annually at a rate of (2.44).

The archaeological and tourist attractions in the governorate are varied, the most famous are: Qarnaw town, Khirbet town, Kamenhu, Naseeb temple, the inscriptions of the confession, Baraqesh, and Wadi al-Shadheef.
The topography of Al-Jawf Governorate is predominantly plain, as it overlaps with the desert of the Empty Quarter. The governorate is generally characterized by a desert and semi-desert climate, which is hot during summer and moderate in winter during the day and tends to be cold at night.
