An overview of IOM

An international organization known by the acronym IOM (International Organization for Migration), was founded in 1951 and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. IOM is an intergovernmental organization with as many as 151 member states. It was created to encourage human migration without harming everyone's interests.

The organization offers services and advice to governments and migrants, seeks to find solutions to the problems of unregulated migration, and helps in the search for practical solutions to the problems of migration as a humanitarian issue.

Work domains of IOM

Its work includes:

  • Ensure the orderly and humane migration, and raise awareness of the risks of unregulated migration.
  • Resist the exploitation that migrants may be exposed to and help them secure their rights.
  • Protection of migrants from enslavement, tyranny or murder.
  • Provide assistance to migrants.
  • Provide migration services and advice to governments and migrants.
  • Promote international migration law and direct policies to protect the rights of migrants.
  • IOM works in the four broad areas of migration management: migration and development, facilitating migration, regulating migration, and addressing forced migration. 

IOM interventions in Yemen

The organization's main interventions in Yemen include disbursement of cash, in-kind and food assistance to those affected by the conflict in Yemen, and preparation of accurate statistics for those affected by forced migration. The organization also supports health facilities to be able to provide basic services to Yemeni citizens, in addition to implementing projects and health and psychological centers for war victims, providing moral support and guidance, and overcoming all difficulties and problems for those wishing to leave the conflict areas for their own safety.
